Calendar of Rituals and Events at Hokyo-ji Imperial Convent

Hokyo-ji possesses numerous precious dolls, including those loved by the Emperor Komei (1831-1867). Since autumn 1957, the temple has continued to hold biannual doll exhibitions in spring and autumn.

Centering on Kyoto dolls, the exhibitions feature both new and old dolls from different parts of Japan. It is also noted for its gorgeous display of life-size dolls.

It is hoped that this graceful world of dolls will give the visitor comfort and peace of mind.

Description As the opening event of the Spring Doll Exhibition, a Doll Festival performance will take place at the Main Hall. An elegant dance performance by an elaborately costumed Tayu (courtesan) from the Shimabara district of Kyoto, and a performance of traditional musical instruments will be dedicated to Sho Kannon, the sacred Bodhisattva of compassion
